Meet Kim Carr
Author •  Photographer •  Farmer

I’m Kim Carr, an author, photographer, and farmer in Missouri. I share true stories about farm animals and the people who care for them through my books and photography. Much of my work grows out of my own life on the farm, where animals have been part of my everyday world for more than 35 years.

My connection to farm life began long before I became a photographer or author. I grew up near St. Louis, but spent summers on my grandparents’ 40-acre farm. By the time I was 10, I knew I wanted a farm of my own. I eventually earned a degree in Animal Science and have spent more than 35 years living and working on my own small farm.

Farm life has given me an endless supply of true stories. From a house chicken named Dandelion to a rescued Great Pyrenees named Lucy and the endangered heritage breeds I’ve photographed, the animals themselves are at the heart of my work. My children’s books are based on real experiences and illustrated with my own photographs, digitally transformed to help bring each animal’s personality and story to life.

Writing has become my primary focus, but photography remains an important part of how I tell stories. My ongoing Heritage Breed Project documents endangered livestock and poultry and the farmers working to preserve them. That work is also growing into a book combining black-and-white animal portraits with the stories of the people who care for these breeds, so their stories don’t quietly disappear.
This website is home to my books, photography, and stories from around the farm. You can explore my Around the Farm books, discover my Heritage Breed Project, shop signed books and other products, and sign up for my newsletter to follow along as new stories unfold.
At the heart of my work is a connection to animals and the stories they give us. I want readers to experience farm life a little more closely, whether they have lived around animals all their lives or have never set foot on a farm.

Through true stories and photographs, I hope to spark curiosity, encourage compassion for animals, and help people understand why preserving our agricultural heritage matters.

If my books leave a child asking one more question, a grandparent sharing one more story, or a reader seeing a farm animal a little differently, then I’ve done what I hoped to do.
